Biography of Francis Chromczak (AMA No. 011848A)
Francis “Moe” Chromczak was born in New Brunswick, NJ, 1934 and lived in that area until he relocated to several Caribbean islands in the 1960s. During his stay in New Jersey, he worked on a dairy farm during which he developed his nickname Creeping Moses and was called Moe. Also, while living in NJ, he developed an interest in riding motorcycles and joined a local motorcycle club, Raritan Valley MC (AMA Ch. No. 751), after riding across the USA in the 1950s. Around that time he really got interested in dirt bike riding and other motorcycle competition and won many prizes, trophies and awards. In addition to motorcycling, Moe got involved in flying airplanes and was a flight instructor at a general aviation airport in central NJ. This flying transitioned into his trip to the Caribbean where one of the first things he did upon arriving, was to purchase a motorcycle. The list of Moe’s motorcycles was extensive and includes, 1961 Honda CB92 125cc twin cylinder and a Harley-Davidson Model XA, which was an opposed cylinder, shaft drive, military motorcycle prototyped by the U.S. Government for desert warfare us in WWII. One of Moe’s original motorcycles, from 1966, (Honda CT90) is still being used by his nephew in Connecticut today. Francis Chromczak competed in the class 2 lightweight division on a two stoke Maico in the late 50’s. AMA publications indicating a first or second place finish for Francis Chromczak include July 1958, June 1959, July 1959, and December 1959 to name a few. We have several of Francis Chromczak First or Second Place Trophy Plaques from ’59 Daytona Drags, 1958 Laconia Sportsman Class Lightweight Event, 1959 Laconia Sportsman L/W, 1959 Vineland Speedway Class 2, 1959 Sandy Lane Enduro and several more. On July 15, 1982 the AMA presented Francis Moe Chromczak with a Charter Life Membership though 25 years of service. Francis (Moe) passed away in 2009 while in St Croix, USVI but his nephew Joe still competes in the Sandy Lane Enduro with his motorcycle club Pathfinder’s MC of Connecticut. |
